Training on Occupational Health and Safety at Mitaly Tannery Ltd

On May 29, 2025, a training session on Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) was held at Anjuman Trading Corporation. Key personnel from the factory attended the session. The training was conducted by Project Leader, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Sarwar Morshed, Deputy Leader, Dr. Abu Hamja; Research Assistants Md. Mahfujul Haq, Mongsathowai Marma and Asif Mustafa.

The OHS training focused on various critical aspects of health and safety in tannery operations. Key topics covered included:

Introduction to OHS: The session highlighted the importance of OHS in protecting workers’ health and well-being. It emphasized the necessity of collaboration between employers, workers, and government to ensure workplace safety.

Globally Harmonized System (GHS): A key component of the training was understanding the GHS for chemical labeling. This international framework helps standardize the classification and communication of chemical hazards to improve safety.

Health Hazards in Tannery Operations: Various chemical exposure risks were discussed, including the dangers of chromium exposure, toxic fumes, and skin irritants. It was highlighted that certain chemicals like formaldehyde and sulfuric acid pose significant health risks to workers.

Ergonomics and Workplace Safety: The importance of ergonomics in improving productivity and preventing musculoskeletal issues was covered. Attendees were shown how poorly designed workstations and improper postures could lead to long-term health problems.

Preventive Measures and CEO’s Role: Practical steps such as using personal protective equipment (PPE), ensuring proper chemical storage, and regular health check-ups were recommended. The CEO’s role in promoting a safety culture, providing OHS training, and overseeing risk management practices was also emphasized.

The session ended with a group work activity, focusing on risk prioritization and actions to mitigate health and safety risks in tannery operations.
