Khokon Tannery Visit
On December 20, 2023, our team conducted a meaningful visit to a tannery, aiming to foster relationships and gain insights into the existing scenario, particularly focusing on product processing. The visit, led by Rejaul Haq, the Accountant in the Account and Finance department, commenced at 2 pm. Although it was our first visit to this tannery, the participants welcomed us warmly, creating a positive atmosphere for communication.
Discussions centered around the tannery’s current conditions, productivity, product range, main buyers, challenges faced, and future plans for developing environmentally friendly products. The tannery processes materials from wet blue to crust or finished based on customer demands. Satisfied with their productivity, the team engaged in conversations about regulatory compliance, workforce roles, technology integration, and upcoming trends. The production floor showcased an organized and decorated environment, reflecting a commitment to excellence.
Assurances were given regarding the willingness to adopt new systems, including Lean and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). Discussions also revolved around the Leather Working Group (LWG) certification, with positive indications of the tannery’s proactive initiatives toward achieving it. Key discussions touched upon safety policy initiatives, first aid treatment for workers, facilities provided, and concerns about the Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) hindering business expansion.
